I ordered a TIG torch for my DC inverter a few days back and have been having a play with it. Had me beat for a bit but soon found out that for less heat to be in the tungsten tip it needs to be run reverse polarity from normal. Then the second mistake was I was using normal oxy filler wire.

I got some proper filler rod today and some 6mm plate for a practice. Did about 3-4 runs just on the plate to get the settings right (100amps) and then did the below. First shot is my first fillet attempt, not real flash in the middle. Contaminated the tip and ended up with a wandering arc. Second shot is my second and final attempt.

I'm going to build the gearbox crossmember tomorrow with the tig so we will see how that goes.

Just to clear things up a little bit.. I was going to do things like the IPOR FZJ40 but decided that another rego and ins sitting around for most of the yr didn't suit me at the moment. So I thought I could still have all my running gear and cool things that I have planned but to run with the 45 cab. I will then have my DD, play toy in a oner.

Started on the gearbox crossmember yesterday. As I have a 60's 5 speed I had to modify the 80 crossmember to adapt. Only drama I have now is where the crossmember bolts to the chassis it is back way too far for the motor to be sitting in the right spot. I'll have to have a look at what I'll do to move it or I might have to use the old rear mount crossmember that I had in the 40 and make two new brackets to weld on the inside of the chassis rails.... a few pics of what I got up to yesterday.....

60 crossmember sitting behind the 80...

Start cutting...

Tacked into place

As you can see, it sits way too far back...

Pick this up next week... ... Got the whole lot for only $200! I will then have 3 cabs and two sets of doors.... Should be able to make a decent widened cab with those!

I have been told these are too short so will just have to see
Did you ever find a stud that worked? What I've been doing is installing the studs as usual and running small wheel spacers.. I'm sure theres a more elegant solution out there.. I've seen washers put under the heads of the studs, this is a poor solution IMO..

Hey M8,
I never got that far actually. I finished off the conversion and then sold my 2 diffs. Im not sure what the bloke that bought them ended up doing. Ive seen the washers under the heads too, not too bad of idea in one way but I'd rather see the notches in the stud bite into the disc. Wheel spaces are prob a better option IMO.
